Good Samaritan
, 7/22/2010

This is a follow up to a young mountain girl’s quest for a life saving operation.
2007 was the year of a medical mission to Peru that would lead the group of volunteers in to the mountains of Huaycán a very poor area. There a church mission served the needy the best way that they could manage. The group from His Work in Progress was stunned to see hundreds of people lined up that first morning. They were told by the good sisters that people came down from the mountain at four AM just to be seen by American doctors. In the remote parts of the world this in not uncommon when the locals hear of American doctors visiting. It was during this mission that a young girl named Eveling was diagnosed with a severe heart problem after arriving simply to see the dentist since they were very poor. This is a story of what happened since that time.
Eveling came to the United States and lived with a host family named Burns. They were very hospitable and if fact became very close over the course of the month of Eveling’s stay. Eveling had several tests at St Mary Medical Center and Doylestown hospital to see if anything could be done for this young girl. It was determined that her heart was too large for surgery and that medication had to relieve the pressure in her heart. The Catholic Standard and Times wrote an article about the mission and the young girl. A reader was so moved that he wanted to help this girl in some way and contacted His Work in Progress. He decided to help the intelligent yet poor young lady with her education and offered to enable her to go to college by paying for her $1200.00 tuition.
Fast forward to today and that individual can no longer pay for her education. The young girl also is undergoing more tests to see if anything further can be done for her health. There are some very good doctors who wish to remain nameless but are working behind the scenes. I was told that they are not in it for the publicity of their efforts simply to help another human being. To bring Eveling back to the US for special testing will incur additional costs that His Work in Progress does not have and needs to bring her for testing. Eveling misses school now that the funds have dried up and so the appeal is to be a good Samaritan and to help this young person move on with her life to become healthy and a productive educated member of society.
