Long Term Vision

"So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out." - Revelation 3:16
The terrible events that have unfolded in Haiti can serve as a stark reminder not just of the great suffering caused by extraordinary natural disasters and the like, but also of the suffering that happens every day around the world, even in our own neighborhoods. I see all of the good being done by people around the globe, particularly in our great country, and I am proud. However, I can't help but wonder what will happen when the telethons end and the camera crews have disappeared. Will the fervor to help still exist?
The point is that we cannot become lukewarm. We all know what the Bible says about being neither hot nor cold, but lukewarm. It is not desirable, but it is a condition that affects each and every one of us. It is not easy to be passionate about something 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While events like Haiti serve as large wake up calls, we must strive to find that same fervor in our daily lives. Long after these stories have left the front page we must be the ones to carry the torch and serve as an example to others.
I am proud to say that His Work In Progress has been active in Haiti before the earthquake and will be there long after the cameras are gone. If you wish to take part in long-term efforts to help the people of Haiti, opportunities will be available. Just remember that Haiti is everywhere. Haiti is in your nearest city where a family cannot find a place to sleep at night. Haiti is your neighbor who can't pay his or her bills. There are opportunities everywhere to do good by others, but it is up to us to maintain the desire to seek them out.
